March has been a busy month!

Ahead of International women’s day on March 8th, Cuisine magazine published its list of Aotearoa New Zealand’s TOP 50 most influential & inspiring women in food & drink 2024.

Amongst the list of outstanding women featured Kirsty Schmutsch, owner & director of Pembroke Patisserie.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22962″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow” qode_css_animation=”” css=”.vc_custom_1711068331172{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;}”][vc_column_text]“I am thrilled to be included in this list with these incredible, extraordinary and hard-working women”. In 2023 Cuisine Magazine editor Kelli Brett founded the Women In Food & Drink Aotearoa New Zealand (WIFDNZ) network. This year there were more than 400 women nominated to be included on the list of women who have inspired them in the past year.

“I’ve worked in the hospitality industry my entire career It’s a challenging, rewarding and interesting industry. I love so much about it and love that I get to work alongside my husband of 15 years, the best baker and chef around. A career in hospitality isn’t easy, but it is fun a lot of the time. I think that is what has kept me involved for so long. The people that you meet, the stories I could tell!”

We are so proud of what we have created at Pembroke Patisserie over the last 10 years. It has become a place where our passion for patisserie and hospitality can shine through. Where we can create and provide beautiful food, service and coffee while celebrating our local environment and supporting other producers in our region too. Our community embraces us, and we embrace them back. It’s a beautiful relationship we have between our customers, community, staff and suppliers. We all support each other![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

If you would like to hear more about Kirsty’s story and career so far, come along to the Wanaka Business Chamber Women’s coffee morning at Edgewater on Thursday 13th June 2024 from 10am-11:30am to hear more! Book here

I’m not sure where the years have gone, but suddenly its our 5th birthday for our hugely popular and successful flagship patisserie in Albert Town.

What a wild ride it’s been! We are constantly amazed and delighted by the successes we continue to strive for and achieve. Despite the questionable looks, we knew that opening a purpose built kitchen and café in Albert Town was absolutely the right thing to do back in 2017 when the opportunity presented itself. They say timing is everything and this place was it and the location perfect. We love being part of the thriving Albert Town community.  When we opened our doors for the first time on 1st November 2018, we really couldn’t imagine the success and popularity we could have achieved.

We are thrilled to call ourselves an award-winning business, having won the Outstanding in Hospitality & Retail award twice at the Ignite Wanaka Chamber of Commerce Business Awards in 2019 and 2021. Also a highlight in 2021, was being awarded “Best Local Producer” at the Lake Wanaka Tourism people’s choice awards. In 2023 we were awarded the “Best French Bakery” title from the French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (FNZCCI) in Auckland.

We have certainly achieved a lot in the last 5 years, but we have in no way done it alone. They say it takes a village and we certainly have a magnificent one! Kindness, generosity, authenticity are what we strive for and we have been fortunate enough to have all these things and more reciprocated to us over the years.  We have a lot of loyal and dedicated people to thank who have got us this far. From staff past and present, suppliers, family, friends and of course customers from near and far! Thank you for your unwavering support.

It has always been our intention to bring you a little taste of France in Wanaka. We strive to bring you the best and friendliest service, most consistent coffee and most delicious pastries, desserts and breads we can possibly make. Hospitality is our absolute passion, and we truly mean it when we say, “It’s always nice to see you”.

We will continue to do our very best for you everyday!

Bon appetit.

We were honoured to win the accolade of New Zealand’s Best French Bakery at the 2023 French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Gala & Business Awards (FNZCCI) on Monday night.  The awards acknowledge excellence in French cuisine from bakeries, cafes and restaurants throughout NZ.

Kirsty was invited to attend a glitzy gala dinner in Auckland and was presented with the award on stage by the French Ambassador to New Zealand Mme Laurence Beau.

“We are thrilled to receive this award. Our front of house team really stepped up to try and get as many votes as possible. This is very much a celebration of their fantastic efforts too! People’s choice awards are special to us because our customers take the time out of their busy lives to vote so we are really appreciative of them and how they support our business so wholeheartedly.”

Creating and baking French food is an absolute passion of ours and there is no higher honour for us than to be recognized by the French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce!

As we all know, the French people take their gastronomy very seriously. It is so much a part of their culture and identity and we are very proud to represent and celebrate the most delicious French baking and pastries everyday in our little slice of paradise in Wanaka.

“We were absolutely thrilled to even attend, let alone take out the top People’s Choice award,” she says. “I didn’t realise the French Ambassador Laurence Beau would be there, so it really made it that extra bit special to be receiving the award from her.”

Pembroke Pâtisserie received 45% of the total competition votes to win the People’s Choice, Best French Bakery award. It was one of nine applicants entered in the category.

“The award is a collaborative effort between us, our customers and our Wānaka community,” Schmutsch says. “Votes for the People’s Choice Award were done by QR code -the front of house team at Pembroke Pâtisserie took on the challenge with great gusto to secure as many votes as possible from our loyal and enthusiastic customers. We are passionate about French pastries and baking, so for us, this is the icing on the cake!”

“Even though we are a small patisserie at the bottom of the South Island, we’re pretty chuffed that we can compete with some of the big-name bakeries in the North Island.”

French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce business development and operations manager Jeanne Nicolas says the day was about highlighting French culture.

“Food and gastronomy is a really important part of the French culture, and way of life,” she says. “I feel like French people are really proud of what they can achieve, to represent the culture abroad.

It is the French New Zealand Chamber of Commerce’s third time organising the awards – with competition categories including People’s Choice of Best French Bakery, Best French Café & Bistro and Best French Restaurant.

Public vote for the People’s Choice Awards opened February 13, 2023 and closed March 6, 2023. More than 220 New Zealand, French and French Pacific guests gathered at the Ellerslie Event Centre to celebrate the award winners on March 6.

A down on his luck private investigator, Dick Chaser, takes us along for the ride on a case that is rife with deliciously dangerous consequences when he investigates the theft of pastries from a famous local French patisserie. When the following of the crumbs leads him across town, he is confronted by a decision he wished he would never have to make….

We had great fun making this short video which premiered in July at the French Film Festival Aotearoa held at Ruby’s Cinema & Bar in Wanaka.

We channeled the film noir 1940’s genre to create a gorgeous black and white a short film advertisement made especially for the big screen. A deliciously fun project involving friends and family brought to life by the talented team at The Film Crew.

And we reckon you can’t eat NZ cheese without a handmade oatcake or award-winning gingerbread biscuit to put it on!

Next time you are shopping, why not shop local and check out your local cheesemonger, farmers’ market or delicatessen and ask them to recommend you a new or interesting New Zealand made cheese to try? We make some really fantastic cheeses in NZ.

With the weather warming up, for easy entertaining this summer, we’ve created some classic hors d’oeuvres recipe ideas using our Oatcakes. They use simple, fresh ingredients and only take a short time to prepare.

The three hors d’oeuvres are Beetroot, Goats Cheese & Honey, Blue Cheese, pear & Walnut and Smoked Salmon & Creme Fraiche on Oatcakes.

We have recipe postcards available at the patisserie for you to take home, but you can also download them right here!

If you are looking for our oatcakes, we supply a few select stores around the country. Moore Wilson’s in Wellington, Raeward Fresh in Queenstown, Florence’s Foodstore and Café & Mediterranean Market in Wanaka.

Keep it light, fresh and simple this NZ cheese month with Pembroke Patisserie.

Bon appetit

We love our cycling customers! And it’s great to read that they love us too!

Today we were featured in a great write up in the NZ Herald, where Sarah Bennett gives a run-down of all the favourite local rides that are easily accessible by bike, or by a car then a bike.

Our honorary mentions included:

“Albert Town is home to bustling Pembroke Patisserie, where you can butter yourself up before heading back to town or venturing onward on to various trails starting from the bridge. These include the Deans Bank, Hāwea River, and Upper Clutha River trails that continue downstream towards Luggate. There are several days’ riding in that lot alone.”

And our favourite:

“Whether you’re on the bike or off it, a visit to Pembroke Patisserie is pretty much compulsory. I went five times in a week and ended up mainlining creme anglaise.”

Thanks Sarah![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Check out the full NZ Herald article here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
